Working fitness for the real world.

The better you can move, the stronger you are, the more of life that is available to you.

But this isn't hamsters on a treadmill, exercise for the sake of exercise, and trying to convince yourself that you want to "be healthier" or look good in front of a mirror when deep down you know you don't really give a shit.   No wonder it's hard for a lot of people to get excited about fitness given the fluffy, gimmicky, sterile and superficial garbage that is the predominant spray-tanned face of modern fitness.  It's embarrassing, but it's not the whole story.

In 1902, an educator named Dudley Allen Sargent warned that "without solid physical education programs, people would become fat, deformed, and clumsy".

 Turns out he was right.

Sargent was witnessing the early stages of fitness's transformation from a by-product of simply living to an isolated pursuit - to a chore rather than the essential foundation of eating, fighting, travelling, fucking, working and surviving.  As necessity has decreased over the past 100 years, human fitness has lost much of it's natural purpose and meaning, to the point that it now, unbelievably, means driving to the gym to run stationary on a treadmill for many, and being sedentary for millions of others who realize how ridiculous this is - whether consciously or not.  No wonder we can't get consistently motivated to sweat and workout, when day-to-day we don't have to.

Except that we do have to.  To maintain health and independence over the long-term, to age with grace and capability, and to experience many of this world's greatest joys.

Fortunately modern fitness is evolving, and it it can still have purpose; it needn't be a superficial, compartmentalized errand or gimmicky scam.  Some need to develop their bodies for certain adventures, activities or to live their dreams and others still rely on their bodies to make a living.  We all want to maintain our dignity, grace, independence and self-sufficiency as we age.  We want to be able to do things.

We believe that physical activity can and should be built on substance, purpose and meaning, not superficial bullshit.  The gym is an accessory and a tool, not the point itself, and this isn't about the mirror, the scale, or cholesterol levels, though those are all convenient by-products.  This is utility fitness.  Fit for purpose, built to get the most out of life in Western Canada.

Hatchet is a philosophy, a system and a network designed to inject meaning into movement, and to give you the well known benefits of an active lifestyle as efficiently and enjoyably as possible while providing the foundation for you to take control and shape your own physical development.  It’s not a short-cut, far from it; it’s the beginning of a journey, the first step towards mastery, and a quest.

With that being said, you'll see it doesn't always have to be that hard.

You need to move, this is irrefutable fact.  And you already know it takes some effort.  We'll help you put purpose into your effort, and show you how to apply it efficiently and effectively in achieving goals you actually care about.
